Featured Agritourism Business: Sycamore Valley Farm Bed & Breakfast
A rich family heritage awaits you at Sycamore Valley Farm Bed & Breakfast. Owner, Matt Reichert’s, great grandfather chose this picturesque area in the rolling hills of northern Missouri to settle his family of 12 children in 1870 thus establishing the Reichert family farm. Matt, the 13th of 16 children, continues the rich agricultural tradition of his ancestors with wife, Tina, and their 4 children. Raising row crops, managing a cow-calf intensive grazing operation, the children’s South African Boer meat goats, extensive vegetable gardening and canning all offer an ideal situation for this homeschooling family to share a unique farm experience with guests of all ages.
“The tranquility of the wide open spaces is so appealing to our guests who come from the city,” says Tina Reichert. “They marvel at how quiet and relaxing it is here, and the star-studded night sky frequently invokes the comment, ‘Look at all the stars!’ It is such a blessing to share the abundance of God’s creation with all of our visitors.”
The private walk-out basement guest quarters provide the ideal ‘home away from home’ for a romantic get-away as well as a family vacation. A vintage hat collection, family photos, and antiques accent the spacious accommodations of the ‘Rose Room’. While the cozy ‘Scholars Corner’ is filled with school memorabilia and offers the warmth and nostalgia of days gone by. Guests enjoy a full kitchen, family room, and laundry facilities at no extra charge. The smoke free accommodations are wheel chair accessible and air-conditioned.
To strengthen the family experience, the Reicherts’ hosted several “Family Day” events at their historic farm. Since Brunswick was an original campsite for Lewis & Clark on June 13, 1804, it seemed natural for the Reicherts to develop a family based program to highlight Lewis & Clark’s accomplishments which lead to the westward expansion of the United States after the Louisiana Purchase. In May, families visited this ‘outdoor classroom’ where learning was an adventure for the entire family. The Lewis & Clark Family Day offered fascinating sessions about the Corps of Discovery Expedition, hands-on activities and crafts, while demonstrations brought the past to life. “Our oldest son, Nikolaus, developed a special ‘expedition course’ for children from 11 years and older to challenge their strength, endurance, and orienteering skills (how to use a compass.)” Due to the success of the Lewis & Clark Family Day, plans are being made for an event in July. Those interested in receiving the Sycamore Valley Farm Newsletter announcing future and area events can register on the ‘Farm Experiences’ page at www.sycamorevalleyfarm.com.
A wide variety of visitors have experienced the gracious country hospitality of this family since Sycamore Valley Farm Bed & Breakfast was established in 1994. Guests, from all over the world, have had the opportunity to learn about agriculture and every day life on a working farm. In addition to their international guests, the Reichert’s have hosted families, business travelers, vacationers, couples, and youth groups. “It is exciting to realize, not only are we teaching people about how things grow, but growing stronger families and friendships in the process. I guess you could say we grow corn, beans, wheat, and priceless memories. That alone makes each reservation a joy to book.”
North Central Missouri has its own rich heritage. Guests can roam the “neighborhoods” of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Civil War General Sterling Price, and Lewis & Clark. Take a stroll down a tree-lined lane to the see the unique construction of Locust Creek Bridge, the oldest of Missouri’s three remaining covered bridges, or visit the Chariton County Historical Society Museum in Salisbury. The museum offers an extensive collection of primitive tools and farm implements chronicling the history of agriculture in this area. Not only is the soil rich and fertile in the river bottoms of Chariton County, but the area has a tremendously rich history as well.
Come for the day, visit for a weekend retreat, make reservations for a family vacation in the bed & breakfast or camp in one of our primitive campsites locations. A unique farm-stay experience awaits you at Sycamore Valley Farm Bed & Breakfast …… where priceless memories are always in the making.
